Cocopah student participates in national band competition

News Releases

April 12, 2013-- The Tierra Del Sol Middle School, Sun Dragon Band and Honor Choir traveled to Disneyland in California to compete against middle school bands and choirs from several different states including Nevada, California, Arizona, and New Mexico.  The band and choir both received a first place trophy in the Single A Middle School Division with a rating of Superior.

Cocopah Tribal member, 5th grader Christoferson May participated with the TDS Sun Dragon Honor Choir at the Disneyland competition. In order to do this, he had to pass memorized singing tests on two of the performance pieces. He also had to skip his morning recess to attend choir everyday, bring all his materials daily (pencil, folder, lyrics, etc.), and participate with a positive attitude.  He was able to meet and exceed these expectations with the support of his family and his drive to be a great student vocalist.

Two other Cocopah students with the TDS Sun Dragon Band are Marisol Correa and Angelle Valenzuela both 4th graders.  Even though these students did not compete in Disneyland, they are still valuable members of the TDS music program who have shown commitment, perseverance, and a genuine love for music.

“I am proud to have had the privilege of working with these very exceptional students and would like to thank their family members and tribe for their support of music education” says Alicia Mulloy, TDS band teacher.
